The Calgary Yacht Club (CYC), nestled on the east shores of Chestermere Lake, has a rich history dating back to the early 20th century. Originally known as the Calgary Sailing Club, it was founded by passionate sailors Morris Shyback, Roy Lea, and Mike Sullivan in the 1920s. Their love for sailing laid the foundation for what would become a thriving community centered around water sports.
In 1933, the Club was officially incorporated as the Calgary Yacht Club, welcoming both sailing and, at that time, motorboat enthusiasts. Led by their first Commodore, Mr. A.B. Himmelman, the Club commissioned the construction of its first clubhouse and facilities, including piers and boathouses. Over the years membership increased steadily, despite a dip during World War II.
1951 brought a move south to a quieter area of the lake. The original 1933 clubhouse underwent expansions and improvements, a second clubhouse built in 1974 facilitated its evolution into a hub for social gatherings and sailing activities. The 1933 building was replaced in 2010. Grass and trees were planted to beautify the surroundings and upgrades to the docks and boat storage area accommodated the growing membership.
The types of sailing vessels at the yacht Club have varied over the years, from dinghies to larger classes. Popular one-design boats, like the Y-Flyer and Laser, brought members together for friendly competition and leisurely sails. The introduction of sailboard classes added to the excitement on the water, with colourful sails dotting the lake on sunny days.
In recent years there has been a strong emphasis on junior training programs, recognizing the importance of nurturing future sailors and competitors for Canada Games and the Olympics. Dedicated staff and instructors offer a range of programs, including summer sailing camps and Thursday night racing, which attracts sailors (young and old) to learn, compete and enjoy the sport of sailing.
The Club ensures a high standard of excellence in training and recreational activities. Training boats like the Club 420’s, Optis and skiffs like the 29ers have replaced older models, providing young sailors with top-notch equipment to hone their skills. The Club has also welcomed members of the community with disabilities to the sailing program. The Club hosts regattas and training sessions tailored to meet all needs. The Calgary Yacht Club thrives as a “working” club, where members volunteer their time and skills to maintain and improve the facilities. Past Commodores and countless members have contributed to the Club’s success, ensuring its legacy for generations to come. The CYC is hosting an event from July 19th to 21st, celebrating 100 years of sailing on Chestermere Lake. Sailing boats designed before 1970 will be a central attraction.
