This year marks a significant milestone for the City of Chestermere as it celebrates its 10th anniversary of becoming a city. Officially incorporated as Alberta’s 18th city on January 1, 2015, Chestermere has grown from a small summer village to a vibrant lakeside community with a rich history and a bright future.
Chestermere’s story began in the early 20th century when settlers arrived, drawn by the fertile farmland surrounding Chestermere Lake. Originally created as a reservoir to provide water for irrigation, the lake became a popular spot for recreational activities in the 1950s. Families began building cottages along its shores, transforming the area into a summer village.
In 1977, Chestermere officially became a hamlet, part of the Municipal District of Rocky View. It continued to grow rapidly, becoming a town in 1993 and eventually a city in 2015. This transition reflected the exponential growth in population, services, and community spirit, as Chestermere evolved into a destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts.

Chestermere has experienced incredible growth over the years, transforming from a small summer village into a thriving city. In 1977, as a summer village, Chestermere’s population was just 120 permanent residents. By 1993, when it became a town, that number had climbed to 1,269.
Since then, the city has continued to expand. Compared to the 2021 federal census, Chestermere’s population has increased by an impressive 27%, reflecting its status as one of Canada’s fastest-growing municipalities. This growth highlights Chestermere’s appeal as a family-friendly, lakeside community with a vibrant future ahead.
“It has been incredible to see the progress of the City of Chestermere over the last 10 years, and this Council is committed to continuing to move our city forward for its children and grandchildren,” said Mayor Shannon Dean. As Chestermere celebrates this milestone, residents can reflect on how far the city has come while looking forward to a future filled with growth, innovation, and opportunity.
Here’s to 10 years as a city — and many more to come!
