History is the bridge between the past and the present, connecting us to our roots and guiding us toward a better future. It is through the preservation of historical artifacts, stories, and traditions that we gain insight into the struggles, triumphs, and lessons of those who came before us.
At the heart of preserving history lies the value of taking initiatives. Individuals like Jennifer Peddlesden exemplify this ethos, demonstrating the power of proactive engagement in safeguarding our collective heritage. By taking the initiative to document, protect, and celebrate local history, individuals like Jen play a pivotal role in enriching community life and fostering a sense of belonging.
Originally hailing from a farm near Strathmore, Peddlesden’s connection to Chestermere began in 1976 when she acquired property by the lakeside. Since then, she has been deeply involved in various aspects of community life, from volunteering at schools to spearheading initiatives such as the Chestermere Historical Foundation. Peddlesden has been the chair since 2011.
“When my great uncle expressed worry about the fate of the family’s belongings, I knew I had to do something,” Peddlesden reflects. She took it upon herself to contact the Glenbow Museum, initiating a process that would ultimately preserve the family’s heritage for future generations.
As Glenbow Museum experts assessed the historical significance of the documents and artifacts, Jennifer’s appreciation for history deepened. “Seeing the enthusiasm of the museum staff and realizing the value of our family’s story made me realize the importance of preserving history,” she recalls.

Beyond her efforts in historical preservation, Peddlesden’s dedication to service extends to volunteering and supporting mothers and families through the La Leche League Canada.
Being a passionate history collector Peddlesden’s house serves as a private collection, filled with artifacts and antiques that tell the story of her and her husband’s family histories. With a keen knowledge of local history and a personal connection to many of the town’s residents, Peddlesden is a walking encyclopedia of Chestermere’s past.
Her dedication to preserving history and her intimate familiarity with the community make her an invaluable resource for anyone seeking to understand the roots and traditions of Chestermere. As Jen looks forward to organizing the 100th anniversary of sailing on Chestermere Lake, her enthusiasm for the community remains undiminished. She affirms, “It’s a great place to live; I’m more and more impressed with what a nice community it is.”
