Unlock a World of Resources, Programs, and Prizes with a Free Library Card
In Chestermere, there’s a special place often missed by folks—the Chestermere Public Library. “It’s everything from digital literacy, civic and cultural literacy, early literacy, art, and space literacy—all these different literacies. So, we’re providing programming events, collections, and specialty collections to support all these different skills and all these different literacies,” said Miranda Johnson, Director of Library Services.
“You also get over 30 e-resources available with your free Library card. From online classes to free movies and music, there’s something for everyone. You can even learn new hobbies or brush up on skills with platforms like Creative Bug and Kanopy,” said Spencer McDonald, Social Media Marketing Coordinator. “You can enjoy our stuff without a card. You only need one if you want to take stuff home,” said Miranda Johnson. And once you’ve got that card, “You can borrow up to 99 things at a time,” said Spencer.
With a Library card, patrons unlock access to tech gadgets like iPads and wi-fi routers, alongside hobby kits for hands-on learning. From car code readers to gaming consoles, the Library offers practical tools and new experiences, fostering personal growth. In addition to hosting regular family programs, the Library gives out parenting kits with activities for families to do together. One of the Library’s best-kept secrets is its extensive connectivity.
With a Library card, patrons gain access not only to Chestermere’s collection but also to a network of 180 libraries across Alberta. This means that even if the desired resource isn’t available locally, it can be sourced from elsewhere within days, all at no extra cost.
“We built an early literacy play area over here, and it’s packed, and parents say there’s nothing like this in Chestermere, so I could see that being three or four times this in a bigger space.” It’s a vibrant community space where artists showcase their work, where children engage in enriching activities, and individuals of all ages come together to learn and grow.
In the words of Miranda, “Everybody needs the Library.” Despite its invaluable offerings, many remain unaware of the breadth of resources available within its walls. As Spencer recounts, even accessing resources from other libraries through Chestermere’s card system remains a hidden gem for many.
Chestermere Public Library envisions a future with expanded facilities to accommodate the growing community, it’s clear that the Library’s mission remains steadfast—to provide a space where knowledge knows no bounds and everyone is welcome to explore, learn, and thrive.
