Representing Chestermere and Canada on the world stage of dog showing and grooming is a formidable team, deeply entrenched in their passion for canines. With a staggering array of achievements including guiding over 2500 dogs to championship status and securing more than 500 Best in Show awards, this duo has become synonymous with excellence in their field. What’s truly remarkable is their bond; they are a mother-daughter team whose dedication and love for dogs drive them to showcase the best of their abilities in every competition.
Shaunna’s journey into the realm of purebred dogs began decades ago, rooted in a family business of dog grooming. With a love for dogs that surpassed all else, she found herself naturally drawn into the world of competitive showing and grooming. “I didn’t have any choice; I just got into it. I love dogs more than people,” said Shaunna.
Originally known as “Wag to Whiskers,” Shaunna Bernardin’s grooming salon has evolved into “Global Groomers,” a name that better reflects their international presence and diverse offerings. While still honoring their roots, the addition of “Global Groomers” signifies their focus on teaching and education within the grooming industry.
Their achievements in the field are nothing short of remarkable. Shaunna Bernardin, a prominent figure in the world of dog shows and grooming, boasts extensive experience as a professional handler, breeder, and judge. With a career spanning decade. She has garnered numerous awards and trophies, showcasing her exceptional grooming skills and commitment to breed excellence. Having worked in countries such as China and Japan for 15 years, Shaunna’s international experience has further enriched her expertise in the field.
Madison, having grown up in the midst of this legacy, has emerged as a rising star in her own right. With a natural talent for handling sporting and working dogs, she is quickly making a name for herself in the competitive circuit. But their journey is not without its challenges. Long hours, extensive travel, and the unpredictable nature of dog competitions test their resilience. Yet, driven by their shared passion for their craft, they persevere. “We usually run on like three hours of sleep per three days of the shows,” said Madison.
“If they leave the ring feeling like a million bucks, whether they come out with a ribbon or not, my job is done,” said Madison. She expressed that their goal as professional handlers is for the dogs they show to feel like they are the best-looking dogs in the building. Madison highlighted that the ultimate aim is for the dogs to have a positive experience and to feel good about themselves.
Beyond the show ring, Shaunna and Madison are dedicated educators, sharing their knowledge through online grooming channels and hands-on workshops. “We love teaching,” says Shaunna. They also encourage average dog owners to come and learn about their dogs as well as some grooming tips. “We welcome you with open arms and accept you with all our hearts,” said Madison.
They also expressed her enthusiasm for researching breeds that are not widely recognized or popular. Through the research, they aim to shed light on these underappreciated breeds, highlighting their beauty and distinct qualities. This mother-daughter duo from Chestermere is poised to leave an indelible mark on the world of dog showing, handling, and grooming.
