On Remembrance Day, we acknowledge the courage and sacrifice of those who served their country. This Nov 11, 2023, Township 24 Brewery in Chestermere is opening its doors to the amazing sounds of Kyle Martin. Along with celebrating community spirit, this event will raise funds in support of the life-changing mission of Guitars for Vets.
Guitars for Vets Canada is a Canadian organization with an amazing cause. There are many veterans that face PTSD or other service-related disabilities when returning home. This organization wants to provide gently used guitars and lessons to these veterans in need. Their mission is to put the healing power of music in the hands of heroes.
Kyle Martin, an artist with an appreciation for this cause, shared his story that inspired his connection with Guitars for Vets. During his two active combat tours in Afghanistan, a sea can care package was sent from Canada. He says, “There was a guitar buried towards the back and I had wanted to learn to play for years.” His grandfather was the only musical person in his family and unfortunately Kyle was not able to spend a lot of time with him. Although he was not able to learn from his grandfather, it had sparked in him a desire to learn music.
With the guidance of a fellow service member, he started learning the basic chords like G, C, D, and A. Kyle claims, “As soon as I got back to Canada I went and purchased my own guitar, and the rest is history”. Playing the guitar became his refuge, taking up his concentration and providing a sense of purpose. It was a journey that began in the shadows and gradually brought him onto the stage. Kyle’s first public performance was nerve-wracking, but the healing power of music made it worth every trembling knee.
Kyle’s personal journey is a testament to the healing and transformative potential of music. It’s a journey that Guitars for Vets aims to support for veterans nationwide. This is what makes the event at Township 24 Brewery so meaningful – it’s a celebration of music, community, and the profound impact it has on the lives of veterans.
This fundraiser will be held on November 11, 2023, a Saturday from 7:30pm to 9:30pm at the Township 24 Brewery in Chestermere. Tickets will be sold by donation at the door or through Eventbrite.ca. Kyle will be playing songs he has written himself as well as some covers. He says, “It will essentially be a night of music, just people and their guitars singing.”
