Local Heroes
There are many heroes in our midst, who toil and labour in the shadows, and deserve some recognition by shining a light on their contributions to the community. Whether big or small, these will be chronicled in this Local Heroes section of Chestermere Today.
Our first local hero is Chestermere resident PHUONG TRANG. You may have seen his posts on Facebook regarding his ongoing project to repair and rehome bicycles within the community.
Chestermere Today had the opportunity to sit down with him to find out more.
When asked about his passion for bikes, Phuong shared that his love of fixing bikes started back in high school when he worked at a Calgary bike shop. That experience gave him the knowledge and know-how he now draws upon to give back to the community with the gift of refurbished bikes for families.
Phuong explained that when the pandemic hit, like many, he found himself with extra time on his hands. During this free time, he found himself heading out to the garage to tinker.
What started out as a small repair shop for neighbours and friends grew into a way to reach out and give back. He would charge a nominal fee for those repairs to help offset the cost of parts for the donated bicycles.
While online, he came across stories of families seeking assistance. After making a public request, donated bikes began arriving at his home in various states of disrepair. Phuong “the bike whisperer” fixes up these previously owned bicycles giving them a new life and a chance to bless another family
To date, he has repaired and provided nearly 30 bikes to very appreciative kids and families in Chestermere.
For that reason, Phoung Trang is Chestermere Today’s very first Local Hero!!!
