
The City of Chestermere is proud to announce our new pilot projects for Off Highway Vehicles as well as Ice Fishing Huts.
Here are some highlights from the amended Community Standards and Traffic Control Bylaws:
TRAFFIC CONTROL BYLAW (dealing with Off Highway Vehicles)
- The City will begin allowing OHV use on public roads as a “pilot program” and will operate 3 Lake Access Points, located at John Peake Boat Launch, Sunset Beach and Anniversary Park.
- In order to operate an OHV on a public road or ice surface, the vehicle must have the following: Valid Insurance, Valid registration, Clearly visible license plate, Operational headlight, Taillight, Brake light and Muffler
- Helmets use is mandatory, unless they are not required under provincial regulation
- OHVs are restricted to roadways with a speed limit of 60kmph or less
- OHVs cannot operate in the City between 10:00pm and 8:00am daily
- OHV operators must hold a valid drivers’ license, and any operator with a Class 7 (Learner’s license), cannot operate a vehicle with over 50cc’s and must be accompanied by an adult holding an unrestricted drivers’ license
- OHV are strictly prohibited operating on pathways, school fields, playgrounds and recreational open space
- All OHV operators must adhere to all provincial and municipal traffic laws and statutes
COMMUNITY STANDARDS (dealing with fishing shelters)
- Fishing huts are permitted on the lake but cannot be used for overnight accommodation.
- If left on the ice overnight, they must be secured to the ice surface and equipped with reflective materials on all 4 sides, that is visible from no less than 15m away.
- Sport fishers must adhere to all of the Alberta Sportfishing Regulations, including attaching their WIN card # and contact information to their hut if it is to be left unoccupied.
These programs are both pilots and may be cancelled by the City at any time.
