Olympus Gym made its debut in Chestermere about three and a half years ago. Alex Halat, a 47-year-old Vice President of Star Valley Oilfield Services, became the co-founder of Olympus Gym for Chestermere when he saw a need for it in his beloved community.
“We saw a demand from Chestermere kids coming to our program in northeast Calgary. We thought we’d throw in boxing as a different option for kids who don’t play conventional sports like hockey or basketball,” said Alex. What’s unique about Olympus Gym Chestermere is that it’s not-for-profit.
“Boxing is an economical sport. We never turn a kid away if they can’t afford it. They can help clean the gym or something, and we’ll figure it out.” With 167 members and with plenty of space, Olympus Gym is the largest boxing club in Western Canada.
They offer classes for kids and adults, including women’s-only sessions, reflecting Chestermere’s diverse community. In addition to boxing, they have a top-notch weight room and an official ring, making it an ideal venue for events.
Alex’s connection to Chestermere runs deep, having lived here for 18 years. “About 40 years ago, on 17th Avenue, which is now Chestermere Boulevard, used to be a gravel road. So, we still ride our bikes out here as kids,” said Alex. He even learned to skate in the local arena.
“He went from being on his back, almost throwing up in his first class, to becoming one of our successful fighters and coaches. That’s what we’re here for—helping youth develop skills and futures,” said Alex about one of his best students.
With only more events on the horizon, Olympus Gym continues to be a place for young ones to socially unwind and learn valuable lessons through sports. This gym is more than just a place to box; it’s a place where dreams are nurtured and futures are forged. So, Chestermere, lace up your gloves, and reach for the stars!
