Have you ever looked at a room and thought "my space is so similar, why doesn't it feel put together like this"?
Is it the furnishings? Maybe. Is it the layout? Possible. But I’ll bet there’s a chance it’s even more elusive than that, and without knowing what the secret is you will never be able to put your finger on it. I’m talking about something that designers know helps to create a cohesive room; but it’s very likely you don’t know about it or have even heard of it if you don’t follow me on Instagram. I’m talking about the “Rule of Three’s”.
The principle behind this rule is that items arranged in odd numbers are more appealing, memorable, and effective then even-numbered groupings. When we see an odd number of items, our eyes are forced to move around the space more, which makes for a more interesting visual experience. How can you incorporate this rule in your home? There are a number of ways, some you’ve probably never thought of.
1) Colour
Your colour scheme should appear three times (or more) in a room to look intentional. Depending on which pieces you chose to have in colour and which are neutral, the colour scheme may either be bold or subdued.
In order to achieve the Rule of Threes for colour, you can implement it is as follows:
60% of the colour in the space should be the main colour.
30% a secondary colour.
10% an accent colour.

2) Accessories
Choose three decorative items of varying sizes and shapes to create more visual appeal. This applies to a coffee table, bookshelf, side table, etc. If the items are similar height, add some books under one to vary the height.

3) Texture & Pattern
If using a group of throw pillows on a sofa, try having three patterns instead of two. If you have a monochromatic room, make sure there are three textures such as a wood coffee table, rattan baskets, and a natural seagrass rug. Texture and pattern break up a matched set and make it more interesting. Remember, texture can also be a pattern itself.

A friendly reminder: Odd isn’t always the way to go. What?? Confusing right? Allow me to explain. Sometimes even numbers work. Think side chairs, table lamps, etc. In instances like these, an odd number can create an unbalanced and unharmonious look.
To summarize, odd numbers add interest, energy and balance, and are more effective at capturing your gaze. This is the secret to a cohesive room. That and balance, but that’s a story for another day.
Hopefully this helps you in your DIY journey.; If you still aren’t sure how to put your space together, I’m only a phone call, direct message or email away ! Until next time. . .
