Chestermere, don’t miss out! Dive into exciting hobbies with Public Library’s award-winning program called Test Drive a Hobby. Spearheaded by Alexandra Priestman, the community librarian, this unique initiative allows individuals to explore various hobbies by borrowing hobby starter kits from the library’s collection. Alexandra explains, “Test Drive a Hobby is a special collection that involves loaning out hobby kits, ranging from recreational snowshoe kits to craft-based activities like soap making or acrylic painting.”
“It’s like a sample of a hobby. You can test it out and see if you want to invest further,” said Alexandra. The program is designed to provide individuals with the opportunity to sample different hobbies without committing to expensive investments upfront. Each kit, available for a three-week loan period, contains all the necessary materials to delve into the chosen hobby.
The inspiration for Test Drive a Hobby emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic, with a focus on supporting mental health and providing free access to hobby materials. Funded initially by a grant from the local community foundation, the program has been well-received since its inception.
With over 20 kits currently available and plans to expand the collection in the future, Test Drive a Hobby caters to a wide range of interests. Popular kits include watercolour painting, acrylic painting, and the ukulele kit. The library’s online catalogue, or TRAC app, facilitates easy booking of kits, ensuring accessibility for all community members.
Maintaining the quality of the kits is paramount, and the library implements a thorough check-in procedure to ensure that each kit is complete and ready for the next borrower. Test Drive a Hobby not only promotes leisure activities but also serves as a platform for preserving and exploring new skillsets.
Alexandra acknowledges the potential of introducing lesser-known hobbies to the community, thereby enriching cultural knowledge and fostering creativity. So, keep an eye open for interesting new kits this year. Until then, why not visit the library today and embark on a journey of exploration through Test Drive a Hobby?
