Female Runner At Sunset

Welcome to Runner’s Loop, where we talk about the joys of running and where we aim to share some inspiration, which will lead to some perspiration!

I am humbled to be asked to share my own stories and helpful hints to get many of you ‘running in the right direction’. As I am an active runner, not only will I share my past experiences but my future ones as well.

A quick little introduction, I am married to my own inspiration and have two adult-age kids. You see, my wife and I had a goal to complete 50 half marathons, which went on to become 100 half marathons, and all before I reached 50. I am happy to say that we did achieve that and learned A LOT about running, the challenges, the successes and the celebrations that come with it. I will be sharing these with you with the goal of helping you find your own inner animal and celebrate your own successes.

Let’s get things started by talking about how to get out there.

No matter what stage you are at, we all share the same challenge of getting our butts out there. At times it feels like all the stars need to be aligned to go for a run. It’s very easy to find excuses not to go. I just ate; I’m feeling tired; I don’t want to get up early; it’s too windy; it’s raining; it’s too dark; it’s too hot; it’s too cold; I don’t want to get sweaty; I don’t want to get too wired, or I won’t be able to sleep; I’m too sore; I need to take my kids to their sports; I need to watch their sports; I need to make dinner; the list goes on and on.

I’m sure every runner has felt like this at some point, and if you haven’t, you aren’t normal! I started my running journey when my kids were one and three, and fortunately, I went on this journey with my wife who had a common understanding of what it was going to take to give each other the ‘me time’ required to get it done. Once you have established that understanding, it’s just up to you to do the work in getting yourself out there.

The crazy thing is that once you get out there, conquer and complete your run, you are almost always glad you did. So, set a plan to get out there, and organize your day around it. If you need, get a running partner so you are accountable to each other and make it happen!

Chestermere is a beautiful community with many pathways to follow, ponds to round, and one big lake to loop!
